And Now He’s Retired: Jorge Gurgel Calls It Quits After Horrific Accident Claims His Mother’s Life

On August 29th, Silvia Gallo, the mother of UFC and Strikeforce veteran Jorge Gurgel, was hit by a taxi while crossing Madison Avenue and 79th Street in New York City’s Upper East Side. She was killed almost instantly, despite the incredible efforts of several bystanders to save her.

Jorge had spoken to his mother some 40 minutes before the accident. She was running a few final errands before departing the city to begin a year-long stay in Ireland, where she would work as a Pilates instructor. The conversation they had was brief, but nothing short of foreboding, as MMAJunkie reports:

She literally said, ‘If you die tomorrow, everybody’s lives will still go on. You don’t need to take care of everybody. I want you to get rid of all the bad energy in your life. You have to get rid of all the crazy.

It was of those mom speeches.

Jorge’s mom was always his biggest supporter, even if she couldn’t find it in her to attend her son’s fights in person. Recalled Gurgel, “Everywhere we went (she said), ‘This is my son. The fighter I talked about. This is the fighter.’ She was just so proud.”

But at the same time, Silvia was also the strongest proponent urging for his retirement. It was “never his true calling,” she would tell him. After 12 years and nearly 25 professional bouts, Gurgel had done as much as he could as a fighter. But as a coach, there was still plenty of life left in him.

“If you continue to fight, you’re never going to give your students or the future generation a fair chance,” she told him.

And in keeping with his mother’s wish, Jorge Gurgel has decided to retire from mixed martial arts competition.

[VIDEO] Dana White Shows Off His Money Gun Filled With Heroin Bullets, Or Whatever, For Jetset Magazine

Dana White has long been known to have a…let’s call it “eccentric” taste in art. Look no further than the paintings and portraits lining the walls of his office, which range from a Yakuza member having sex to a gorilla holding a gun, to confirm this. Basically, The Baldfather’s art collection is an extension of his personality: abrasive, extravagant, slightly intimidating, and lacking in anything resembling nuance. You might even say that Dana White is to collecting art what Miley Cyrus is to making it.

Taking some time away from his busy schedule, White recently gave the folks at Jetset Magazine (whatever that is) a tour of “the most testosterone-filled office in the world” while more or less discussing how baller his life is. It was a pretty interesting interview for the most part — a clashing of cultures reminiscent of his bizarre luncheon with the Financial Times. The far and away most head-scratching moment came early on, however, when White showed off one of his favorite art pieces: An AK-47 wrapped in dollar bills and stuffed with heroin and cocaine. We’re guessing that the artist behind it goes by a pseudonym.

That’s a gun that’s taped up in dollar bills. What this piece of art represents is … literally on the other side on that clip, those are all real drugs in there. There’s cocaine, black tar, heroin, and a bunch of other actual legit drugs that are in the clip over there. It represents what war is really all about. What happens as a result of war. It’s all about money, what happens to the soldiers who go over and fight, most of them become addicted to drugs or messed up somehow. So it’s pretty cool what this piece of art represents.

Today’s lesson: If you are a rich white man, you can possess cocaine and heroin as long as it’s “art.” (And by “art”, we mean a base-level interpretation of war delivered with the subtlety of an Ed Hardy rape whistle.)

The 10 Greatest Finishing Moves in MMA: 2014 Edition

It’s been quite a while since we first penned our list of “The Ten Greatest Finishing Moves in MMA“ and a lot has changed in the time since. While some of our choices are even more relevant now than they were when the list was originally published in April of 2011, most of them seem either inaccurate or simply out of date in light of current circumstances. Knowing what we know now, we’ve decided to update our list to align with today’s MMA landscape. Enjoy.

#10 – Matt Mitrione‘s Football Tackle

Matt Mitrione has evolved into quite the knockout artist since his time on TUF 10, and it’s easy to see why: He’s incredibly light on his feet for a man his size and is easily one of the most purely violent punchers in the heavyweight division. All the man named “Meathead” needed was a little refinement, go figure. That being said, two of Meathead’s last three KO victories have come less by any sort of striking technique and more by a football-style collision of two giant dudes (phrasing). His 19-second finish of Philip De Fries at UFC on FUEL 9 was the first knockout to come by way of hip thrust in UFC History and his recent win over Derrick Lewis at Fight Night 50 looked like something between a forearm shiver and a

In any case, it’s obvious that Mitrione’s professional football past has largely aided his MMA present, and we hope to one day see him score the KO via Goldberg Spear he has been working towards for years now.

Miesha Tate vs. Rin Nakai UFC Promo: ‘Fighting Queens’

(props: UFC on YouTube)

Outside of the Mark Hunt vs Roy Nelson main event, the most compelling matchup at this Saturday’s UFC Fight Night 52 event in Saitama might be Miesha Tate vs. Rin Nakai — a meeting between an American former title contender and an undefeated Japanese mythical creature best known for semi-nude baking. The oddsmakers have Tate (rightly) pegged as a strong -240 favorite, but with the burly Nakai enjoying home-field advantage, it’s hard to count her out completely.

This “Fighting Queens” promo gives us a closer look at Nakai’s backstory, judo prowess, and training environment, and reveals her as a humble competitor who welcomes the challenge of representing Japanese women in the Octagon. As her trainer Fumio Usami puts it: “In order to make MMA really take off in Japan, I think a Japanese fighter needs to win. I think it’s important that Rin Nakai wins.”

Also, some random pervy dude takes photos of Miesha Tate and her friend at a shrine or something. Check it out.

“Double-KO to the Nuts in a Christian Fight” Delivers Exactly What It Promises

(God smites them down at the 1:03 mark.)

The greatest YouTube title of the day goes to “Double-KO to the Nuts in a Christian Fight,” which is actually a clip from that Fight Church documentary that you probably never watched. MiddleEasy passed this along yesterday evening, and if you want to see a double-knockout via simultaneous low blows in a Muay Thai fight held at a place of worship, this is the best video for you, at this particular moment.

Short version: The guy in red trunks knees the balls of the guy in black trunks, who lands an uppercut (!) to the junk of the guy in red trunks at the same time, and then they pray about it. Not bad, but I feel like both of these guys would get murdered by Benny “Hurricane” Hinn.

VIDEO: Randy Couture’s Seductive Foxtrot on ‘Dancing With the Stars’

(Props: The DWTS YouTube channel)

UFC Hall of Famer Randy Couture made his ballroom debut last night on Dancing With the Stars Season 19, and completely BEASTED it. Couture’s foxtrot with Karina Smirnoff was good enough to earn a score of 31 from the judges, placing him at a very respectable sixth place out of the 13 contestants. Obviously, Alfonso Ribeiro landed in first place with a score of 36. On the other hand, Julianne Hough said Randy was “making [her] randy,” which is more valuable than any number on a scorecard.

Watch Randy Couture’s complete dance performance above, and if you have any good captions for the photo below, shoot ‘em to us in the comments or on twitter.

Video: Comedian Russell Peters Says the UFC ‘Will Play Itself Out’ Due to Oversaturation

(Props: @JayRussellMMA)

Standup comedy superstar and Last Comic Standing judge Russell Peters went on SiriusXM’s Todd Shapiro Show last week, and spent a minute discussing his love of boxing and MMA. As Peters sees it, boxing is about to enjoy a resurgence, but the UFC brand is struggling due to oversaturation. I mean, we’ve been saying the same thing about UFC oversaturation since 2012, but we’re just a bunch of keyboard warriors and haters, right? Russell Peters is a guy who’s actually done something with his life. Here’s what he had to say:

I always said the UFC will play itself out, they’ll oversaturate the market and they’ll lose their event status. And that’s what’s happening lately. They’ve got a lot of cards on, but you don’t know what you’re watching. Am I watching an old fight, a rerun? Is this UFC, is this TUF, is this Fight Night? I don’t know, they’ve changed it all, they’ve given it all these different titles, so you don’t know what you’re watching anymore…[it's on] every night, and you don’t if it’s old, new, live, taped. You don’t know anymore.

Xyience Sold to Big Red, Will No Longer Be an Official UFC Sponsor

(“This is Xyience 101″…holy crap, that is still hilarious to me.)

Xyience — the sports nutrition and energy drink company that has been a prominent sponsor of the UFC since 2006 — has been sold to beverage company Big Red Ltd., according to MMAPayout. Though Big Red will continue to seek out the sports demographic for advertising Xyience and its energy drink brand Xenergy, the company has decided to end Xyience’s sponsorship of the UFC.

In an interview with BevNet, Big Red CEO Gary Smith explained that the decision was made as part of a new strategy that will see Xyience target a broader range of health-conscious consumers, like Crossfitters and marathoners. “I’m just gonna soften it up a little bit,” Smith said. “Make it a little less hardcore than the image that it’s got today.”

I’m no marketing genius, but let me explain something, Gary: This guy buys energy drinks; this guy does not. These guys buy energy drinks; these women do not. I’m tellin’ you bro, throw all your advertising dollars at meatheads and gay club kids.

According to BevNet, Xyience is by far the largest brand that Big Red has acquired, with approximately $45 million in annual sales, not incuding “vendors like gymnasiums and GNC- and Vitamin Shoppe-type stores, where it has claimed robust growth.”

The brand also carries some unfortunate baggage…

TUF 20 Debut Pulls In 536k Viewers For Worst Premiere Ratings in Show’s History

(“Beauty might be skin deep, but so are our viewers.”)

If you were overcome with a sudden feeling of deja vu while reading that headline, you’re not alone. We’ve written some variation of it at least three times now — once for the TUF 16 premiere, again for the TUF 18 premiere, and probably once for TUF 19, but we don’t care enough to look it up — with the only variant between them being the perpetually-descending number of viewers tuning in each season. But yes, the numbers are in, and with 536,000 viewers, TUF 20: Easy on the Eyes, Hard on the Face has shattered the record for the lowest viewed season premiere in the show’s history. I guess we should have seen this coming.

I don’t mean to make some overarching statement about the state of WMMA here, but this can’t be a good sign for the popularity of the women’s strawweight division. Between the social media campaign, the PR tour, the red carpet premiere, and the blatantly sexualized marketing campaign that was put together for this show, it was safe to say that the UFC had a lot riding on TUF 20. Expectations were high, and the season premiere bombed. Hard. Like, the Jacksonville Jaguars’ offensive line hard.

The craziest thing about all this? The TUF 20 premiere was actually good. The brackets, the attention to the fighters backstories, the massive upset that was Torres vs. Marcos — it was a top notch episode from production to pacing. While the dwindling quality of seasons past has been rightfully reflected by its viewership (or flat out discussed on the show itself), TUF 20 is the first season in the show’s history to crown a champion at its conclusion. It had stakes, dynamic participants, all of the stuff that reminds us what a compelling show TUF can be. Yet no one fucking watched it.

I’m not sure what there is to take away from TUF 20‘s abysmal numbers, really, other than the fact that FS1 will likely never be a comparable platform for delivering MMA content to Spike TV. But be honest, how many of you actually tuned in for last week’s premiere?
